John Richey | Tartan

John Richey | Tartan

La Bodega Gallery is pleased to present Tartan
an exhibition of new work by John Richey.

Tartan will be exhibited from November 10th thru December 5th.
Opening reception Friday, November 10th from 7-10 pm.

This exciting new exhibition of vibrant ‘flannel’ shirts, limited edition fine art prints, and hand-painted video animations fully envelops the gallery in a raucous fray of color, pattern, and movement. The title refers to the artist’s obsessive use of patterned imagery consisting of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colors. This collection of work seeks to allow elements of chance and flexibility into a labor-intensive practice that grapples with the transformative nature of information; including information retention and loss. By working back-and- forth between, and with different combinations of hand-made and digitally fabricated elements, Tartan investigates the physical or conceptual glitches that occur in the spaces between human and digitally rendered processes.

John Richey is a visual artist who creates work using themes and images borrowed from various personal collections. Originally from southwestern Arizona, he holds degrees in combined media from the University of Arizona and the University of California, San Diego. He has exhibited domestically and abroad and was profiled as part of Art Forum Internationals "Best of 2004" roundup. He has attended artist residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta, Canada, the Bronx Museum of the Arts AIM Program, and most recently the Studios at MASS MoCA residency in North Adams, MA. Over the past 13 years, in addition to his active studio practice, Richey has held various professional titles at New York galleries and fine art institutions including Marian Goodman Gallery, Greene Naftali Gallery, the Keith Haring Foundation, and Pace Gallery.

Day of The Dead Celebration

Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead is a time to honor and remember our family, friends, ancestors (and even pets!) who have passed. One of the most important pre-Hispanic holidays, it's rooted in the Mexican belief that death is a natural part of life and it's important to maintain our bonds to those who have died. Come join us as we make our family and community altar, eat Mexican food, make art, enjoy music and short films, and make special offerings.
